Title: Obituary of John Cassidy Stewart
Publication: Newspaper clipping found in the Bible of Hamlet and Mary Craig Totten, in the home of Maxine E. Stewart, Rural Valley, PA
Prominent Citizen Dead. John C. Stewart died at his home on Main Street, this place, Thursday evening, April 17th, 1902. Mr. Stewart was one of the most prominent citizens of Armstrong county. His long and upright life, among the people of the county, made him well thought of by all who knew him, and his circle of acquaintances was large. Deceased will be missed in the community for he was an intelligent and broad minded man, a man with whom it was a pleasure to talk because he had read and thought on the great questions of life. He was a member of the Presbyterian church, and died trusting in the Saviour whom he served. He was born at Cross Creek Village, Washington county, Pa, June 4th, 1836. His father's name was Geo. Stewart, and his mother's maiden name was Isabelle Cassidy, a sister of the late Squire Samuel Cassidy, of near this place. The Stewart family moved from Washington county to this locality in October 1837, when deceased was a little over a year old, and this has been his residence ever since. He was married, July 12, 1864, to Mary C. Totten who survives him. She was a daughter of the late Hamlet Totten, one of the early residents of this place. Mr. Stewart served in the army on Co. M, 5th regiment, heavy artillery. He taught school twenty-six terms, most of these in Armstrong county. Besides his widow, he leaves to survive him, a son, Dr. G. L. Stewart, of this place, and Miss Emma Stewart, a teacher in the public school here. He also has a brother and three sisters living: George A. Stewart, who resides in the west; Mrs. Martha J. McFarland, who resides in Rural Valley, and Mrs. Mary Hosick and Miss Nancy Stewart, of Meredith. Mr. Stewart took sick while attending court at Kittanning as a witness, in March 1901, and has been confined to his room, and much of the time to his bed, almost continuously since, making a sickness of more than a year. He was a patient sufferer during all of this long period. His sickness was caused by cancer of the stomach, and for the last few months the principal trouble was dropsy. During the whole of his long sickness, he has been tenderly cared for by his wife and family.

He had been elected the first Burgess of Rural Valley borough, in February preceding the beginning of his sickness, but on account of his continued ill health, he resigned last August and his nephew, T. G. Hosick, was appointed in his stead. Funeral services were conducted by his pastor Rev. J. R. Mohr, assisted by Rev. J. W. Dunbar of Elderton, in the Presbyterian church, Saturday afternoon. Interment in the Rural Valley cemetary. A large number of people attended the service. Thus passes from our midst one of the principal men of the community. We extend our sympathy to the bereaved family. May they have the true comfort which comes alone from God.
